HKA Grade 5 - Global Issues Unit - Sai Kung

Hi,

This may be a long shot but here goes. I'm a teacher at HK Academy in Kennedy Town. Next year our school is moving to Sai Kung and in an effort to prepare students for the transition we'd like to integrate a field trip to Sai Kung into our next 'unit of inquiry' about global issues. Given your unique knowledge of HK we were wondering if you might be able to help us look at Sai Kung from this perspective.

I'm not sure which global issue we might look at but perhaps "preservation of culture identity" or something related an environmental issues might work.

Any thoughts you have on the matter are appreciated. BTW, found you on the Friends of Sai Kung website.

Daniel Muller

Hi Daniel,

My first reaction was "you should contact Friends of Sai Kung", but I see you've already done that!

Here are a few thoughts - not sure if they'd fit or not:

  • The Sai Kung area was very remote. Before WW2 there was no road access.
  • It was a centre for anti-Japanese guerilla resistance during WW2, partly because it was so remote
  • There's the exodus of families from villages in the New Territories (not sure exact dates, but around 50s-70s)
  • High island reservoir project
  • The old villages have expanded, bringing in lots of outsiders (both non-Chinese, and Chinese from outside the district) who like to live in a house
  • Now a popular tourist destination
  • Transportation issues
