HAN Suyin
I had little time for Han's work, although it was often attractively written, as it frequently consisted of unsubtle cheer leading for Chinese communists, and was written in comfort, a long way from their activities. The"British police official" to whom she was at one time married, and who receives scant attention in her obituaries, was Malaya Special Branch counter-insurgency genius Leon Comber, to whom the modern state of Malaysia owes a great deal. It is interesting to speculate on how the marriage came about. Comber, who later had a publishing career in Hong Kong, is still with us, I believe in Melbourne. Han sometimes wrote under the name of Elizabeth Comber.
