Hi,

I can't place it anywhere in Hong Kong. About 2/3 across from the left there's a distinctive pillar in the background with a cross on. Does anyone recognise that?

If you have any other photos of Hong Kong, we'd love to see them.

The houses at the back are reminiscent of the early Kowloon Tong Estate but I'm not sure the time frame fits and there are very few places in the estate large enough for a small park. Other things. To note are the o/h wires. Are they electrical or telephone? The people in the picture seem to be mainly Amahs and their charges. Also there is some sort of flagpoles or ship's mast at the back? Could they be barrack buildings?

Hi there,

There also seem to be a stone monument by the mid-right, with a cross at the top of it.  There seemed to be a building of sort behind the monument,

On the other hand, there seemed to be an oening before the cable pole with a group of people.  By the mid-left there seemed to be a wooden frame of sort with something under or in it.

Would the style of the outdoor furniture provide some information?  I began to wonder if it is NOT Hong Kong.

Best Regards,

T

Hi, Thanks for the extra photos.

I tend to agree with Thomas that this was taken somewhere else. If you know of any Shanghai-photo experts, I'd ask them if they recognise it.

Regards, David

thanks for your great info

This looks like the Margary Monument near the Bund in Shanghai

This memorial monument was erected in 1880 for Augustus Raymond Margary (1846-1875) a British diplomat murdered in SW China which sparked the Margary Affair which led to the Chefoo Convention.

The memorial was moved in 1907 to the Public Gardens in Shanghai at the northern end of the Bund by Soochow Creek.
