Re: Photo
Interesting photo. Hard to nail down.
May not be TST as the photographer appears to be entering a Chinese inhabited area of the city. The ridgeline looks like the Kowloon Hills in the background with Beacon Hill rising on the left. The lower hill in the distance tends to indicate that the photo was taken in Kowloon.
It appears that the photographer is looking at a northbound street probably in Yau Ma Tei. Of course, the striking feature is the gas holder (?). I cannot be certain but perhaps Shanghai Street at the junction with Jordan Road as seen on this map here
junction at jordan Rd & shanghai St.
I received the original photo and found the signage which stated Sixth Street. I think Moddsey is right.
Re: Sixth Street
The name change from Sixth Street to Jordan Road occurred in 1909.
Jordan Road
Are we looking along Jordan Road here or Shanghai St? I was assuming Jordan Road with perhaps the Shanghai St junction in the distance?
Re: Jordan Road
I think the photographer is standing on Jordan Road but looking northbound at Shanghai Street.
Shanghai St
thanks Moddsey.
Location
I also think the photographer stood on Station Street (renamed to Shanghai Street), looking north, but south of todays Jordan Road. Sixth street doesn't seem to exist at that time. On the 1896 map it is visible. The gas works opened in 1892 (or even earlier). Probably the photo is some ten years older than 1905.
