A photo from 1937
Tom Hutchinson arrived in Hong Kong in October 1937, and this photo was in a packet of negatives dated 2 November 1937. The view is along Prince Edward Road facing West. I think No. 177-179 is shown on the left and the same building is across the road as is on http://gwulo.com/node/17459.
I see from Phil's SCMP article that the building was 74 years old in 2011, so it is likely to have been there in 1937.

Nice Scene
Nice scene of waiting for a bus to arrive.
Given that it was 1937, Bus No. 8 plied between Star Ferry via Nathan Road, Prince Edward Road and Kowloon Tong. Not sure if the terminus was at Essex Crescent or at the end of Waterloo Road where the No. 7 Bus terminated.
Bus 8
Moddsey - you are a fount of all knowledge....I spent ages trying to look this stuff up.

Re: No. 8 Bus
The date of your photograph is correct. In 1938, Bus No. 8 no longer travelled along Prince Edward Road as the route went from Star Ferry - Nathan Road - Argyle Street - Waterloo Road - Essex Crescent (Kowloon Tong) and later the terminus changed to Grampian Road near Kowloon City.
