When they opened the flats for occupancy in 1965, there was a large group of famillies who were amongst the first group to move in. We (the kids) had a wonderful time! There was so much space, it was relatively safe and holidays just seemed idylic! When we moved in, there was no fencing around the playing field and the sloped banks just led down into the counrty park below. My father spoke of seeing deer in the early mornings, eating the shoots of the freshly sewn grass on the football pitch!
Sometime in 1967 my friends and I found a large cache of fireworks under the Guildford Rd. road/bridge leading down to the government flats. We told 'someone' who told someone else - next thing we were leading a small group of Hong Kong's finest to the spot. We were later told that it may have been something to do with the riots that year? I do know that the sale of fireworks was banned in 1967!
