Nationality: Chinese-British,
Nationality: Chinese-British, Born Swatow 1903, Occupation: wireless operator. BAAG April 43 – October 45.
Citation:
“Owing to lack of staff the BAAG had to depend on locally recruited operators for their forward posts. Chan was in complete charge of our Advanced HQ W/T communications for 2 ½ years, 12 months of this being service behind enemy lines. During these evacuations of AHQ due to enemy flying columns, he displayed most commendable devotion to duty, maintaining W/T contact with HQ so that important intelligence reports could get through, even under the worst and most dangerous conditions. Throughout his service he was most efficient and reliable and in times of danger he was at his best.”
(signed) L T Ride, Colonel.
Capt Urquhart, BAAG to Col Ride:
"Chan Cheung Yu merits notice. He was our senior Chinese Wireless Operator, and worked like a trojan - very willingly, very reliably, and very cheefully. ":
