The temporary government offices in Statue Square are in the foreground. Note the conspicuous absence of the HSBC lions. The lions were removed in 1942 by the Japanese and subsequently found in Japan after the war and placed in their original positions on 17 October 1946, about a year after the photograph above was taken.
