The hills on the right don't look right for Shek Tong Tsui. Were there any gasometers further east along the North shore?

Good observation with the hills. Yes agreed, it does appear that the identification of the gas works made on Flickr is incorrect.

That said, there is an interesting article about the gasworks in Hong Kong in the HK Telegraph dated 27 June 1902 which gives information about the West Point gasworks and the gas storage facility in Wanchai. Upon futher checking, the gasworks in Wanchai was located on Cross Lane. The gasworks in the original photo appears to be the one located in Wanchai off Wanchai Road to the east of the Naval Hospital with the barren Morrison Hill on the right. The photo below shows the gasometer and a white-coloured building behind which matches the one in the original photo. 

I have created an approximate place for the Wanchai Gasometer and updated the caption reference.
