Some years ago I had the pleasure of taking June’s daughter Fleur, together with the latter’s husband Gordon, back to Stanley. I say “back” because although Fleur was actually born in Shanghai, she was living in HK with her parents at the time of the Japanese invasion. Fleur entered the Camp aged 13 months and came out at the age of 5.
Fleur and Gordon were visiting HK from their home in Australia.
I was particularly pleased because we were actually able to obtain permission to visit Stanley Prison on this occasion, which I can assure you does not happen often! We were able to visit the (now) garages opposite the American Block from where the food rations were issued, in which June was heavily involved. We were also able to visit Tweed Bay beach, where Fleur (and many internees) went swimming when the Japanese permitted.
Upon her return home, Fleur sent me a typed-up document entitled “Memories of Stanley Internment Camp, 1942 To 1945, by June Cheape.” It makes interesting reading.
I can forward a copy to anyone who wants one, if you e-mail me at tideswell27@hotmail.com. The document consists of 14 pages A4 size.
