There was the Hackett Medical
There was the Hackett Medical Center in Canton where my brother and I were born in 1927 and 1932, respectively. Was this perhaps named after a relative of Doctor EWR Hackett, or is the name a coincidence? Does anyone know? - Don Ady

Hi Don,
A search on the internet finds a "Hackett Medical College for Women". Do you think that was the same place you were born?
Wikipedia says:
Dr. Fulton opened her first training facility, called the Kwangtung Medical School for Women, in 1901. It was housed on the ground floor of the Theodore Cuyler First Presbyterian Church in the western suburbs of Canton and consisted of 11 female students. The building was not sufficient as the students were forced to have their meals in the outpatient room.[8] With three thousand dollars raised by the Dr. Fulton and Presbyterian mission, a special hospital for women and children, called the David Gregg Hospital, was built as a teaching facility for the school.[7] In 1903, Mr E A Hackett donated enough money to build a special building to house the college, and it was renamed the Hackett Medical College for Women. Three years later, in 1906, another gift from Hackett allowed a second building to be built to house lecture and laboratory rooms. The first building became dorms.

I guess that E A Hackett was an American connected with the Presbyterian Church. If E W R Hackett was British, that suggests they weren't related.

His appointment to Medical
His appointment to Medical Officer is announced in item 95 of the Government Gazette, 26 Jan 1940:
No. 95.—His Excellency the Governor has been pleased, under instructions from the Right Honourable the Secretary of State for the Colonies, to appoint Edward William Ronald Hackett, B.A., M.B., Oh.B., B.A.O., to be a Medical Officer, with effect from 16th January, 1940.

Hi, I have only found your comments now, so please excuse me for being a little late... I wish I knew more, but if this helps; Dr EWR Hackett was my Dad, and he had been interned in Stanley Camp with his family. I came along much later! And as for being British, no, he was through and through West Cork, Eire.
