Water Tank in Tai Hang Tung area [????- ]
Primary tabs
Hi There,
Saw this concrete water tank on a foot path linking up the northern end of Sai Yeung Choi Street North and Tai Hang Tung Recreation Ground. This tank is elevated, with high concrete support. I will update the marker together with a few photos later.
It is behind the swimming Pool of the Police Sports and Recreation Club. This one looked very similar to the ones at Fei Ngor Shan and Aberdeen Reserver. Was the area some what related to a previous military camp?
Checked Government GeoInfo Map and found the location is marked as a rectangle,

I haven't heard a clear explanation for what these tanks were built for. Rob has said before that he didn't think they were connected with pillboxes and that's certainly the case with this one. The nearest pillboxes are far away, up along the ridge near Lion Rock:

Water Tank in Tai Hang Tong Area
Greetings. Photo below - https://gwulo.com/atom/16824
I estimate that the water tank would be somewhere on the left edge of this photo, likely related to the building that looks like a grandstand.
I ventured up that small hill several times and some slopes/cliff are hazardous best to avoid. Boys who I played with on the streets talked about adults lowering themselves with ropes to collect (better word is steal) Myna bird chicks. Above the large hillside steps, I saw the biggest dragon flies in my life catching insects. Adult men went there to watch soccer match on the field closest to the hill. Sweet childhood memories! Regards, Peter
Addendum - August 28, 2019: In the early 1960s, a walk path started from Tai Po Road halfway between Maple St. and Poplar St., and ran eastward. (David's 1956 map -https://gwulo.com/node/46873#17/22.32846/114.16843/Map_by_ESRI-1956_Kowl... . I think it was the same foot path in this water tower photo. The difference is that it ran through a wide stretch of grassland, and south of the school and further east was still undeveloped.
Some men and this teenager who kept birds for companions walked (funny verb here) their birds up this path. I ventured as far as the school yard not enough to see this tower. With no industries or residential area nearby, I believe this water tower supplied water at constant pressure to the police service stadium.
