DEATH OF MRS R. CARROLL

Mother of a well known Hongkong and Far East family, Mrs Rose Carroll died at her residence, No. 13, Bowen Road, yesterday in her 80th year. She was suffering from bronchial pneumonia to which she succumbed at 9 a.m.

Mrs Carroll, nee Rosinada, was born of Spanish parents in Santiago, Cuba, in 1861.  Her voyage to the Far East at the age of ten was marked by tragedy. The family was travelling on the paddle steamer “America” and while at anchor in Yokohama the ship caught fire. The girl and her brother were rescued but their father was drowned.

Mrs. Carroll was the wife of John Carroll of Co. Cork, Ireland, who died in London in 1916.

Her father was one of three brothers who founded the first shipyard in Yokohama about 70 years ago. The brothers owned a fleet of schooners which traded with Siberia in furs and seal skins.

Mrs Carroll lived in Hongkong for 54 years. She leaves two sons and two daughters. They are Mr W. J. Carroll and Mr A, H. Carroll, Mrs Mary Carroll-Smith of San Francisco and Mrs D. Rapp of London.

The two sons mentioned are William Joseph Carroll and Anthony Henry Carroll.  They formed a stock brokerage together and are both in the jurors lists in the early 1920s.  They lived next door to each other in 47 and 49 Conduit Road.
