Johannes Graf (my grandfather) was born in Haarlem near Amsterdam, Holland, 10.2 1914 . He worked for the Dutch East Indies Bank in Hong Kong. After the war he joined the British Missionary Society and was later posted to Swatow, China. There he was imprisoned again for 9 months by the Chinese Communists for being an anti-communist. He married Claire Graf, sister of Renate Graf who is also mentioned in Barbara Anslow's diary, and devoted much of his life to the peace movement including the campaign against the war in Vietnam for which, ironically, he was frequently accused of being a communist. Unfortunately, I never asked him about his experiences and was only vaguely aware of his having been in a prison camp due to the fact that he never liked to eat rice. I am hoping that some of his experiences in Hong Kong, particularly Stanley Camp, will be found in his diary which is still in the posession of his family.
