He was chairman of the Portuguese Residents Association and was arrested at the Club Lusitano and executed by the Japanese.

Mr Basto was using a code based on the game of bridge to send information to Macao. He resisted his interrogators until the last, asking at his trial for a pack of cards and a handbook so he could demonstrate that the notes that the Japanese had found were genuine bridge problems.
