Her father was a King's Counsel. In 1901, aged 18,  she was living at Bedford Square London with her parents and siblings. The family employed a cook, a footman and two housemaids who lived with the family.

Her children were John Hermann Balean born Shanghai 1909 died 1969

Geoffrey Terrell Balean born Shanghai 1910 died 1972.  In WWII he was a Captain HKVDC and a POW 

Richard Masters Balean born Chingkian China 1911 died 1987 in Lincoln

Oswald Bradford Balean born Chinkiang China 1915 died 1996 in Rochester Kent.  In  WWII he was a Flight Lieutenant RAF Dental Corps  Ruislip Middlesex UK

Isabel Terrell Balean died in Rochester Kent  20 April 1963
