Re: Photo
I think that is the signal mast of the Observatory in the background. If that is correct, the photo probably was taken in the vicinity of Kimberley and Observatory Roads, Kowloon.
Miss Batley appears in her stewardess uniform. So photo date 1947-1949.
Address on Kimberley Road
Not sure if the address below is the location of the photograph. Probably nearby.
Luna Building, Kimberley Road
Well done. I think you have nailed it.
The gentle curve corresponds to Kimberley Road. The odd numbered properties are on the north side of Kimberley Road.
The gentle upslope of the road in front of the buildings from right to left of the photo would be Observatory Road.
Where Olive is standing would correspond to 59 Kimberley Road area. Where she is standing would be the level up from street level accessible by stairs within the complex known as the Luna Building,
To clinch the location, there was a 1967 film called "The Peking Medallion" where a scene was filmed on Kimberley Road which included the Luna Building. Look at the last photo down and you will see the exact 8-spoke flower patterned masonary in the film and in the photo with Olive.
Where Olive was standing is now Luna Court. The old Luna Building is long gone.
Re: Luna Building
Thanks for the Luna Building confirmation.
That's so interesting, well
That's so interesting, well spotted!!
Luna Building
I had created a place for it here a while ago, complete with the same image: https://gwulo.com/node/41161
Luna Building
My father lived here when that photo of Miss Olive Batley was taken. He's seen it and can definitively confirm its Kimberley Road and Obsevatory Road. The raised walkway where she is standing led to the flats at 57, 59 and 61 Kimberley Road. Number 63 Kimberley Road at the very end, although having a Kimberley Road address, its entrance was only accessible from the Observatory Road side.
The open ground behind on the photo's right hand side: my father said that was told by his parents that it used to be a parade ground but by the time this photo was taken it was used as a nursery selling potted plants.
Luna Building Address
Yes, the address for the Luna Building was 53-63 Kimberley Road. I think today's Luna Court and Carson Mansion stand on the old site.
Odd coincidence
I have a hand drawing of my great great grandfather and on the rear, the following two addresses are written:
11A Chatham Road
Ground Floor, 59 Kimberley Road
No idea why these two addresses have been written down, as far as I know there's no link between them (please feel free to prove me wrong)
It could be that he and my gg grandmother lived there after he retired from HK Whampoa, we may never know as they died about 40 years ago.
interested to hear anything that anyone might suggest.
