A similar photo appeared in the Hong Kong Telegraph on 23 November showing a blind mendicant eagerly partaking in his food ration which consisted of a congee mix of ordinary and red rice, soya beans, meat, potato, liver and vegetable.
Red rice contained the Vitamin B factor against beri-beri.
