Born 1884  Katheen Louisa Stewart in Foochow (Fuzhou) southern China.

She was a teacher at St Stephens College and married the future principal, the Rev. Ernest . L. Martin, in 1921.

This source gives January 19 as the date of death but says that she died in the Bungalow C bombing (Jan 16). Barbara Anslow's diary seems to suggest that she didn't die of injuries from that day.

Kathleen dragged her toddler brother, Evan aged 2 or 3, plus another sister, out of the burning mission station where her parents (and others) were murdered in 1895.

Evan went on to become a teacher, (later Headmaster in which post he took over from his brother Arthur), at St. Paul's College, HK. Evan Stewart, however, is more famous for commanding No.3 Coy (Machine Gun) of the HKVDC, who fought with distinction at Stonecutters & the Wong Nai Chong Gap in Dec 1941.

The Coy is often referred to as No. 3 (Eurasian) Coy, but Evan always said that his men didn't like that term - so he used (Machine Gun) Coy. Evan was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, (DSO), the only one awarded, for his outstanding leadership and gallantry during the battle.

In 1953 he commanded the detachment of the HKVDC, (then called the Royal HK Volunteer Defence Force), at the Coronation of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II in London and in 1955 was appointed O.B.E.

He sadly died in HK at the young age of 66 in 1958.
