Brian has written an interesting article about this man:

[...] Marcus da Silva, arguably the colony’s most prominent lawyer, and, for those who cared to cast their minds back to those dark days, a war hero, who had courageously smuggled money into Stanley, spied for the British Army Aid Group, and then steadfastly resisted the violent attempts of Colonel Noma’s Gendarmes to make him incriminate himself and others.

I'm in touch with a relative of Marcus da Silva who would like to visit his grave when they come to Hong Kong.

Does anyone know which cemetery he's buried in?

Hi Brian,

If Marcus da Silva was Roman Catholic, it's likely he was buried in St Michael's Cemetery. Unfortunately I don't know if there's a way to confirm remotely if he is buried there. (Can anyone else help?)

A search for Silva in the local newspapers finds one result: tributes to him from the Full Court (see The China Mail, 1956-02-22, pg 10). If you read through a few days of papers either side of that date, you might find details of the burial ceremony.

If those don't help, you might find the answer at the Macanese Families database.

Please let us know what you find,

Regards, David

Hi Brian

My father is buried in St Michael's in Happy Valley. I was very young when dad died, and your website filled in so many blanks for me and brought tears to my eyes after all these years. Thank you so much for your wonderful blog!

I am a little curious as to the identity of our relative. I live in Vancouver, Canada however, some of the family still reside in H.K.  Please feel free to share my contact information with him or her. My alternate email is marcusdasilva@hotmail.com.  Thanks again.

Best regards,

Marcus
