Mr A. L. CAY in Hong Kong 1893

Does anyone have any record of the captioned gentleman who represented Ireland in the HK Amareur Athletic Association meet of that year ?

Forum:

There are some general tips here.

A search for cay in the newspapers returned several results, but I'm not sure if any are the man you are looking for.

My Thanks for your reply.

I am aware that a CAY was the Registrar General in HK in the very early days but this particular name A L CAY appears on a medallion issued to members of an Irish Team competing in the 1893 HKAAA meet along with the names of several officers of the Shropshire Light Infantry and a Police Officer,George Hennessy, later to be dismissed in the great Gambling Scandal of 1897.A Royal Navy Captain, A L Cay lost his life at Jutland when his ship HMS Invincible blew up,there were only 6 survivors ( he wasn't one ).I can only surmise that the 1893 CAY ( born in Penzance ) may have been visiting HK and appeared as a guest in the Irish Team (Tug of War as it happens !). Thanks again.

If you know the date of the HKAAA meet, one other suggestion is to read a few days' worth of newspapers written around that time on the off-chance he gets a mention.

Thanks for this tip,I will pursue.
