NWD commenced the construction of a commercial project (today's New World Centre), on the Holt's Wharf site.

1978

December
Phase One of the New World Centre was completed while the New World Renaissance Hotel began operations inside the New World Centre.

1980

January
Phase Two of the New World Centre was completed.

Wikipedia reports that it was closed on 31 March 2010 for demolition. On my photo from October 2011, it's almost gone.

Hi Klaus,

I believe back then when it was inaugurated, the Hotel was called The Regent.  It may have changed hands and renamed The Renaissance some two decades ago (I think, but not sure)?   After the renovation still underway,  I believe it would be called The Regent again.

T

Hi Thomas,

you're right, the hotel started as the Regent (when I took a photo of it in 1980 - but I don't really remember having noticed it). There is a place for it (Regent Hotel / InterContinental Hong Kong [1980- ]). The hotel survived until today, but the New World Centre behind it was demolished 2010/11. And yes, I also read that the hotel will reopen as the "Regent Hong Kong" in 2022.

Regards, Klaus

I lived at the New World Hotel for a month after moving to HK as a wide-eyed 23-year-old in June 1981: and here I still am after nearly 40 eventful years.

Hi Klaus,

There were two hotels in the New World Centre..  The New World Hotel and The Regent.  There was another New World Hotel across at the Conventional & Exhibition Plaza called New Word Harbour View. since 1988.  That was the one that got renamed Renaissance Harbour View.

Thank you T, it's more complicated than I thought. When you follow the developments in Hong Kong from abroad (like me), some details can be missed easily. Regards, Klaus

Hi Klaus,

NWD owns or operation quite a lot of hotels in town . Sometime even us locals could be confused.
