If you walk along Queen's Road West near here, you can't help notice the smell of all the dried seafood for sale. It has a long history, and local group CACHE currently have an exhibition about it.
They say that the salted fish trade in Hong Kong pre-dates the arrival of the British, and was originally centred in Stanley. Sometime around the 1860s, Sai Ying Pun became the centre of the trade, with companies gathered in the area shown by the marker on the map above. A street ran east-west through this block, and was called Ham Yu Street, where Ham Yu is Cantonese for or Salted Fish.
