Archibald Zimmern came from an old Hong Kong family.  He was born in about 1917.  He served in the Hong Kong Volunteer Corps during the war and for a time was held in the Shamshuipo POW camp.

He married Cicely Winifred Kotewall, the daughter of Sir Robert Kotewall.  Two of Zimmern's brothers also married daughters of Sir Robert. 

After the war he went into the textile business but in the mid-to-late 1950s went to England to study for the bar.  He was admitted to practice in Hong Kong in 1959 in a ceremony before Chief Justice Michael Hogan.  He took silk as a Queen's Counsel in 1973. He was appointed as a puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Hong Kong in 1977 and was later appointed to the Court of Appeal.  He retired as a judge in 1982.  He died on 20 December 1985 in Hong Kong.
