Thanks for the extra detail - I've updated his record.

Does your first note "Apptd Warder" mean he started off as a Prison Officer, and then moved across to the Police?

Regards, David

Prisons were then under the Capt Supt of Police and the junior officers (constables) were interchangeable, similarly with the Fire Services.A man usually served for 3 years and then reverted. This practice ceased as the other departments developed in strength and administration and eventually became independant.

Born Hartmere,Ipswich Suffolk.Departed UK along with a large number of other recruits, not by the usual route through the Med but to St John's ,Newfoundland and then presumably by rail to the west coast and on to HK across the Pacific.

As Sgt A 31 he was Commended for his part in the seizure of a large quantity of Dangerous Drugs in Western..Married Miriam Cottle in 1959 and died in the Ipswich area in mid 1959, aged 81.

Thanks for the extra information,

Regards, David

Appears in a group photograph taken at his retirement from the Force in 1949,photograph offered for sale on E-Bay, " see Hong Kong Police,Collectables " etc.

The maths do not add up here, 1314. You state that he died in the Ipswich area in mid-1959, aged 81. Yet his d.o.b. is given as 1898, which would make him only 61. Is this a typo regarding either his age at death or the year of his death?

Thank you for clarification.
