After my Hong Kong novel, 'The Young Colonials' was published, I was contacted by a stranger in Frinton, Pat Tring, who had bought it as she was born in Hong Kong, and we became good friends. She was 10 years younger than me. I learned that her mother had been an Army teacher at the Garrison School, though she had been on Home leave when we Redwood girls were there. We also discovered that Pat (then 10) and her mother had been our fellow passengers on the 'Empress of Japan' during the evacuation in July 1940. Pat's late father Harold Guard had been a Far Eastern war correspondent; his grandson John Tring (Pat's son) has recently published Harold's war dairies as 'The Pacific War Uncensored' - a most amazing read.
