Gladys was the daughter of Tom Hutchinson, sister of Beatrice, and appears in Tom's war diary as Girlie.

Gladys attended the Public & Thomas Hanbury School for Girls, Shanghai, and Diocesan Girls' School, Hong Kong. Her studies at the University of Hong Kong were interrupted by WW2. After the war, Gladys studied Bacteriology at the University of Wales, Cardiff, on scholarship, and subsequently worked as a scientist for United Dairies in the UK, and for Dairy Farm in Hong Kong. In 1956, Gladys obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Hong Kong.

Gladys married Dr Raymond Mok in 1951. They lived for many years at "Gladray", Lot 1929 Clear Water Bay Road.
