Lai Yuen-lung was a Major in the Chinese Nationalist Military assigned to be the Liaison Officer of teh BAAG when it was set up. He was awarded an OBE. Post-War, he became a Manager at the Fishery Wholesale Market and was a close friend of my father Paul Tsui (65).

“Early in 1942, Mr. Lai was on the staff of Gen Chun Lai Chuen, Adjutant General to the VIIth War Zone. It waas through Gen Chu that all the negotiations for the establishment of the BAAG were carried out with the VIIth War Zone and Mr. Lai was the officer actually responsible for all the detailed work involved on the Chinese side. His work was of such a high order that we requested the Chinese to second him to us because we found that it was essential for the success of any negotiations that all correspondence with the Chinese had to be presented in their official style. The successful accomplishment of this can only be attained by one highly skilled and having long acquaintance with their procedure. Mr Lai fulfilled these demands to such a high order that it is no exaggeration to say that the success of our many negotiations was attributable mainly to his valuable work.
In July 1942, he moved to our advanced HQs at Waichow, where in addition to his secretarial duties he became our adviser on Chinese Military Affairs and Liaison Officer with the local military HQs.
In these capacities he served us faithfully for over three years, an excellent example of inter-Allied cooperation”. (signed) L T Ride, Colonel
