Chan Kam Yuen.

Extracted from a statement by Chan Kam Yuen taken by William Lee of the BAAG on 17 October 1945.

I met Lui Kar Yin in June 1942 through Jimmy Kim.  Lui Kar Yin escaped to Waichow and I met him there in February 1944.  My intention of going there was to report to the BAAG through Captain Chauvin for my back pay, and to get a job.  Lui Kar Yin offered to help me and asked me to board and lodge with him.  From that time until April 44 I helped Lui Kar Yin in his work, and learned that he was doing intelligence work for the British.  He knew very little Chinese, and I helped him in writing letters back to Hongkong, and also to translate some reports for him.    After his escape from the Japanese, Lui headed an espionage group and directed this group from Waichow.  In April 1944 Lui was transferred to Kweilin, and I returned to Hongkong.  On 2nd June I was arrested by the Japanese.

I was brought to the Kowloon City Gendarmerie and was accused of being an agent of the BAAG.  I was beaten with a bamboo for 2 hours when I denied the charge.  On the 13th day of my imprisonment I was brought out for questioning.  I was hanging with my hands behind my back from 2 p.m. to 7.30  p.m. and was intermittently beaten while questions were hurled at me.  In the end I admitted to whatever they said.  They then let me down.   I was in a semi-conscious state.
I was in the Kowloon City Gendarmerie until 13th July 1944 when I was transferred to Stanley Gaol.  On 28th October 1944 I, together with 46 others, were brought up for trial.  I was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
I was released on 23 August 1945 together with other political prisoners.
