Caine Road

Forum:

Hello, it looks as though you're having some trouble creating the Place page. Can I help?

Regards, David

Hello David,

A pleasant suprise to receive your email because I was just fiddling with gwulo yesterday evening and had really no idea what I was doing.

I think I joined some time ago but have never got round to actually having a close look at the site's functions.  As such, when I was looking to see if there might be some old pics of the building on Caine Rd where my Mum used to live in the 50's I couldn't figure out how to access them, if indeed they exist at this site.

Any enlightenment would be much appreciated!

Best,

Anthony

Hi Anthony,

Did your mum live at number 18? That's the address you mentioned on the other post.

Is it the same location as #18 today? According to the government map website, it is currently a building site. But Google Streetview shows the previous building on the site was called Grand Court. I think Grand Court might be a later generation than the building your mum lived in?

Does she give any description of what the old building was like?

Regards, David

Hello David,

Many thanks for the follow-up. I did not know that 18 Caine Rd is now a bkdg site. But makes sense because even #'s are in the south side of the street.

Actually, my Mum's family lived in a bldg that is now the Universal Trade Ctre site.

Back then, the site was occupied by a 4/5 story colonial bkdg I believe.

My curiosity stems from the fact that previously I lived at 23 Caine Rd. On the other side of the steps leading down from Caine to Arbuthnot Rds.

Was thinking of sending a message to Jason Wordie since he is another researcher into things HK but haven't had the time yet.

anyway, much appreciated your continued follow-up. Am presently living in Germany but will moving back to HK next Jan/Fen so will have more time to research my Mum's old home.

Best,

Anthony

This thread has quite a bit of information about the area you're interested in:

Some of the photos mentioned there might show the buildings you are interested in. Please leave a comment if you can add information to any of the photos.

Dear David,

Thank you much again for this potentially very useful info.

I shall have a look at the link and hopefully my Mum's old home will be in one or more of the pics.

Best,

Anthony
