Kadoorie Estate [????- ]
Primary tabs
This is an unusual estate in Kowloon. The buildings are low-rise, with lots of greenery all around, so it doesn't feel like Hong Kong at all.
Some dates from the estate's history page:
- 1931: The Kadoorie family controlled company, Hong Kong Engineering & Construction Co., buys the land.
- 1933: Building starts.
- 1937: By mid-year, three houses, a bungalow and six semi-detached houses had been completed and occupied.
- 1941: By December, 34 houses were occupied, together with 13 apartments in St. George’s Mansions.
- 1960: The estate has 57 houses and 35 apartments.
- 1984: 124 properties in total.
The estate office has a great, old table-top model, originally made in the 1940s. Here's the view from above, which shows the north-east corner was still undeveloped:
And here's the view looking west across Waterloo Road. You can see the CLP HQ building in the bottom-left, St George's Court up on the hillside, and the Diocesan Boys School in the distance, top-right:
