Tadamachi Kuribayashi was a Japanese General in the Second World War. He began his wartime career as the Chief of Staff of the Japanese forces in the Battle of Hong Kong, under General Takashi Sakai.

He was promoted to Lt. General in 1943.

In 1944 he arrived in Iwo Jima, and oversaw defenses there in preparation for the anticipated American invasion.

He died in combat around March 26th of 1945, after leading a (banzai style) with survivors of the Iwo Jima garrison. The circumstances of his death are not exactly known, his body was not recovered as he chose to have no identifiers on his uniform. It is assumed he died in an artillery barrage during the charge.
