One for Raymond or T perhaps? 克強健力學院

I'm looking for the location of a gym. I have no idea if it is still running (though I doubt it) but what I do know is that it was open in 1965 and was used by a certain Bruce Lee on one of his many trips back to HK from the states during the 60's. There is a famous picture of one of the exercise tables he used with the gym name at the top: Hak Keung Gymnasium. I'm assuming it must have been somewhere in Kowloon - Yau Ma Tei area. But thats just a guess. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The Chinese is:

強健力學院

(Hak Geung Gin Lik Hok Yuen).

Cheers all

Phil

Forum:

I can't find the address on the web, but it looks like this person may have exercised at the same gym. Maybe they can help if all else fails.

Hi David

Yes, I also found that link.  I may have to contact that guy - assuming he is also still around. I can't find any other useful references.

Cheers

Phil

Is it the one that you are looking for.

I found it from below :-

Sammy

Thanks Sammy, that looks like the right place. Is the address:  5/F, 204, ... please could you tell us the street name?

Regards, David

Hi there,

The image actually showed two addresses.  The gym was in Wanchai, Fifth floor, #204, Johnston Road.  They have a Branch in Mongkok, Forth Floor, #749 Nathan Road.

Note the floor address was stated in Chinese.  However the Western & Chinese convention on address was sort of different.   For Chinese Ground Floor = 1st Floor and we call the one atop Ground Floor Second Floor.

Best Regards,

T

Thanks T.

Hopefully Phil has got some other clues to help decide which of the two branches the photo was taken at.

Regards, David

Hi there,

#204 Johnston Road would be on the West bound, a little bit westward to Burrows Street.

#749 Nathan Road would be on the North bound, very close to Prince Edward West & Nathan.

Best Regards,

T

Forgot to mention that the addresses were found in 香港年鑒 1960.

Sammy

Many thanks to Sammy for finding that one and to T for the translation. Much appreciated. Sorry for the belated reply.

I think the one Bruce Lee used would have been the Mongkok branch because his family were still at 218 Nathan Road in 1965. This is great stuff, many thanks all.
