Revenge of the Pink Panther | Gwulo: Old Hong Kong

Revenge of the Pink Panther

I was watching this movie and was pleasantly surprised to see that part of it was filmed in HK!  You get to see the Excelsior Hotel, a couple streets I can't place and the HK skyline from the 70s! This is back when Connaught Center was the tallest building around.  Are there any other English language movies from the 70s with HK scenes?

Forum:

I forgot to mention you also get to see an old Dairy Farm ice-cream cart. Never thought I'd see one of those again.

Hi there,

I believe the Nobel House also has a few shots here.  The John Chen kidnap scene, the garden/pond/half coin scene, and maybe some of the Chen family interiors.

Best Regards,

T

Thanks for pointing this out - I didn't realise it was shot here.

I had a look at the IMDB site, and they have a screen where you can search for all movies that include Hong Kong as a location. There are plenty to see! If you add some more, I'd be grateful if you can try out the new 'Film / Movie' type, and let me know if you have any trouble with it.

By a chance I also saw this Flickr photo today that has a note highlighting a Dairy Farm ice-cream cart.

Parts of the video for the Police song "So Lonely" was shot in HK in the 70s. Here's a link although the quality is horrible http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxhzxBLksK8  If anyone can find a better one could you please post it? You get to see Andy Summers on one of those stands the police used to use to direct traffic. Don't know what they're called.

Hi there,

I think it was either 1973 or 1974 when they were in town for a concert or in transit.  BTW, the clip is banned by Youtube here.

The traffic pagoda scene. Would it be somewhere on Hennessy Rd, Wanchai ?

Hi there,

The MTV seemed to be going back and forth between some Japanese and Causeway Bay scenes.

The Traffic Pagoda scene was at Percival & Lockhart,  panning from the then New York Theatre towards Lockhart Road.  That was easy.  I grew up in the area.

There were earlier scenes while Copland playing drum rolls on objects along the pedestrians should also be somewhere along the Percevil area.  I recognized a board with [吉慶] written on it, which should be around Russell Street.  The snack store with lot's of glass containers appears to be Yiu Fung (么鳳) in Fu Ming Street, a side street near the then Lee Theatre.  Yiu Fung still exists today in the same location.

I was unable to recognize where was the police car scene though.

the mtr only opened for business in 1979 and only went as far as admiralty.

this was filmed in 80 or 81.

Hi there,

The train scenes were not shot in Hong Kong.  They were just being cut that way.  I am pretty sure itw as in the mid 1970's as the Traffic Pagonda was already gone in the late 1970's.

I think the police jeep scene was also taken on Percival St but south of Hennessy Rd and looking towards the former New York Theatre which appears on the right of shot. With difficulty, the word York can be made out. Tram tracks can also be seen.

Hi there,

If that's the case the jeep would be parked in Russel Street as well, where it used to be the entrance to the Tram Depot, with Dai Pai Dongs running along the outer perimeter on Russels.

Looks like it came from their 'Around the world' video collection, which as Vanessa notes "captures about one year (from February 1980 to January 1981) of The Police on the road".

The Police played in Hong Kong on 26 and 27 Feb 1980. I tend to agree with T that the metro scenes were shot in Japan rather than in Hong Kong as  indicated in 'Around the world' . Cheers

Hi there,

I just remember something else.  Back in the 1979-1981 period and before the Tai Woo Seafood Restaurant was around, the site was taken up by White Castle Hamburgers.  In the Police's video we did not see anything like White Castle in the background when Sumner's guitar/pagonda scene was panned from East to West.  The Pagonda was already gone back in 1980, thus the video has to be shot earlier.

I attended the concert by the Police, it was held in a disco/nightclub in Causeway Bay. I had just joined the RHKP. We wore Hong Kong Police T-shirts. The BBC DJ Anne Nightingale was there. After the concert she invited a few of us into the dressing room to meet the band. They wanted our T shirts and gave each of us a signed poster. Unfortunately I have long since lost mine. Great memories though.
