St John’s Review of 1951-1952

Dear John,

I’m hoping for a Good Samaritan who’ll be willing to help me with a couple of the 1951-1952 St John’s Reviews when Michael Goulder was the editor. I’m busy with a research project on Goulder and would greatly benefit from a couple of his editorial pieces during that time. In his memoirs, published in 2009, Goulder writes: “I worked happily on the Cathedral staff for a further year and a half, busy with normal pastoral duties. I organized the Cathedral Fair in the autumn of 1951; I preached my first sermon, gave talks and Confirmation courses ... I edited the St John’s Review, sometimes unwisely provoking controversy” (Five Stones and a Sling.Memoirs of a Biblical Scholar [Sheffield Phoenix Press, 2009], p. 14).

I would be willing to make a small donation to the Cathedral if you or someone else might be willing to find some of the controversial articles/ editorials Goulder wrote during his time there. In addition, any possibility that some of his sermons were recorded/ preserved, and is the specific content of his Confirmation courses preserved in any way?

thank you very much

Frederik

My offer of “buy me lunch” applies. I’ll wander down to the Cathedral library and if I find it, lunch is on you.

I dare say you should also make a donation to the Cathedral in any event.

Thank you very much for offering to help.

Michael Goulder was editor between Advent 1950 and the end of 1951. He wrote some controversial articles during that time. If you find any please use your smartphone to take pictures or use a scanner app and email it to fsm1407@gmail.com

I’m living in England...

kind regards

Frederik
