Sai Wan War Cemetery, grave of Gunner Frederick Lowing, looking towards the central path down through the cemetery.
In May 2012, my daughter and I visited the grave of my mother's brother, Frederick Stanley Lowing, who died in Taiwan on 17 March 1944 whilst a prisoner of the Japanese. This was the first time a member of the family had been able to visit his final resting place and pay their respects, over 68 years after he lost his life.
In a strange twist of fate, he was buried in Hong Kong, where his father was born in 1885.

Fred H Lowing.
I don't think Frederick Stanley Lowing was part of the Hong Kong garrison. I think 80th Anti-Tank Regt was based in Malaya/Singapore - so I assume he was captured in Malaya and then interned in Changi and later shipped to Formosa (present-day Taiwan)? I assume that his body was exhumed after the war (1946) and reburied in the Sai Wan Military Cemetery. One thing I was curious about is a reference to a BQMS Lowing in this diary quote below:
"I met Fred Lowing who is now a BQMS in the AA. He was attached to the Royal Scots at the beginning of Dec prior to going on an OCTU in India" (Lt Fields Diary recounting going into SSP from BRH). Any family connection?
Best regards, Philip Cracknell
Frederick Stanley Lowing
You are correct, he was captured at the fall of Singapore on 15th February 1942. I suppose I should have said that.
No connection with the other Fred Lowing.
His Rosie, I would be pleased
His Rosie, I would be pleased if we could make direct contact please, as my family tree investigations have revealed that I am the maternal 2nd cousin once removed of Frederick William Stanley Lowing. My maternal Uncle Reginald Charles Spencer was a Royal Engineer and part of the Hong Kong garrison when it fell the the Japanese. He too was sent on one of the "hell ships" however he died when the unmarked Lisbon Maru was torpedoed by the SS Grouper. I would be happy to share information if your are willing to do so. Probably best if we do that directly by email please. Best wishes, Bill wefmp2019@outlook.com
