He is buried in the Hong Kong Cemetery. His gravestone's inscription reads:

THE LATE MR. VANSTONE.
Funeral Yesterday.
The late Mr James Vanstone whose funeral took place at the Happy Valley yesterday evening, was one of Hongkong’s oldest residents. He arrived in the Colony in 1874. He is survived by his widow, a s0n (who is in the Straits Steamship Company), and two daughters (Mrs Elson of Kowloon, and Mrs Adams of Wuchow), with whom much sympathy is felt.
The deceased having been a prominent Mason, there was a large and representative gathering of members of the various English and Scottish Masonic Lodges at the funeral, including the District Grand Master (Mr T. F. Hough), the District Grand Secretary (Mr A. Morris), Mr F. Brown, and other officials.
The service at the graveside was performed by the Rev. W. T. Featherstone, assisted by the Rev. Copley Moyle. The chief mourners were Mrs Elson and Mr and Mrs Haigh.
