In 1927 the local governmnet installed a new patented type of gas lamp at the traffic circle near the Queen Victoria monument and statue in Central. The design of the suspended lamp, manufactued in Britain, was known as the "Rochester" . The lamp could be raised and lowered by special gear allowing the riigid piping to move up and down without gas leakages.
