Mr Walter Hanming Chen Is Buried At Pokfulam

 

The funeral service of the late Mr Walter Hanming Chen, a journalist and lawyer, who died on Tuesday at the age of 64, was held at the International Funeral Parlour yesterday attended by many mourners. The Rev M.C. Chow and the Rev Lau Chi-ping officiated.

 

Following the service, the cortege proceeded to the Chinese Christian Cemetery, Pokfulam, where a Masonic service was held at the grave-side. Mr W.F.E. Gautier officiated.

Mr Chen left Sydney at 14 for Shanghai and worked first with the Shanghai Times and then with the North China Daily News as a reporter and later assistant editor for 18 years.

He came to Hongkong before the Communists took over in 1949 and was deputy editor of the Far East Economic Review until poor health forced him to retire.

A keen freemason, Mr Chen was a member of the Lodge St John here.

Surviving him are his widow, Anna, and four children, Betty, Rose, Pearl and Walter Jr.

Pall bearers at the services were Col. J.K. Reid, and Messrs W.F.E. Gautier, Wing W. Kwong, C.I. Chen, M.K. Lam, Lee Pui-tong, Charles Mar Fan, and Dr Herbert K.G. Wong.

Besides the chief mourners those who paid respects at the Funeral Parlour and attended the services were the Hon. Kwok Chan, Dr the Hon. Teng Pin-hui, the Hon. Fung Ping-fan, Messrs Tse Yu-chuen, Charles Ying, Ma Man-fai, T.P. Gregory, Au Ping-kwong, C.H. Lam, E.S. Cunningham, L.F. da Souza, R.M.
