Chief Clerk

Can anyone advise what the positions of Chief Clerk and Secretary of the Sanitary Board in the Government meant around 1915? are there 'equivalent' posts in current government?

Also,  is there any way to identify addresses for people around that time?  I've looked in the Jurors lists but can't find the family I'm looking for - JAE Bullock and his children.

Thanks

The only way I have been able to establish the addresses of my grandfather and his wife in the early part of the 20th century is by applying for the birth certificates of their children. If you can access the Ladies Directory for 1915, Mrs. Bullock's address may also be listed in there.

Have you had a look at the Civil Establishments of Hongkong, for the Year 1915 from that year's Blue Book? JAE Bullock appears on page J6, listed as 'Chief Clerk, Colonial Secretary's Department'. There's more information about his position of page J-44. It won't directly answer your question but you can see where his position ranked in the pecking order, and from the salaries see what positions in other departments were considered to be of an equivalent rank.

It also lists if a person was given quarters or not, which may help with the second question. (Civil servants aren't listed in the Jurors Lists.)
