New Uses for Central's Government Hill:

An Envisioning Charette

Government Hill, where the current Central Government Offices are, is a heritage site: it has been the seat of the government ever since the earliest days of our city and has retained a low-rise, well-wooded historic landscape for over 160 years.

With the CGO scheduled to be relocated to Tamar at the end of 2011, the Administration has recently announced plans to sell the west half of the site to a developer for an office and underground retail complex, to demolish the West Wing but retain the Main and East Wings for the offices of the Department of Justice. The plan is now open for public comments until the end of this year.

Should the West Wing be demolished or retained? Is land sale for private commercial development the only option? What are the best ways to conserve Government Hill for Hong Kong people? What are the possible new public uses for the existing buildings, the historic sites and the tunnels inside the Hill? What are the greening opportunities? This envisioning charette is for members of the public to share their views about the future uses of the CGO site and to make positive recommendations on how to conserve an important heritage site.
