cemetary location

I have been searching for an ancestor Percy Ware Grierson and have found on your wonderful site a description of his burial headstone...can you tell me where it is as I am really ignorant of the whereabouts of things in Hong Kong I live in New Zealand...I need to find out more about his life after he was released from internment.

Thank you

Forum:

Lets first copy the grave info:

Percy Ware Grierson
died 7th December 1950
aged 67 years
erected by Helen Yuen

Grierson Percy Ware 1950-12-07

Then I took a peek on Google to see any existing research and found

THE ENDLESS SAGA OF PERCY WARE "aka JOE" Grierso:

We know he was a merchant seaman in Hong Kong and used to travel up and down the Yangtze R. and the coast.

and another post from Jean:

"Looking for information on the Ming Sang - Percy Ware Grierson sailed on her until he was interned in Hong Kong 1945. Would like more information on this vessel."

We start with

the Carl Smith collection, which has this:

1 PERCY WARE GRIERSON 1950 - 104859
2 PERCY WARE GRIERSON; MING SANG SHIPPING COMPANY 1950 - 104857

However, you have to go in person to see the cards. I'm guessing that they are the dates of the obituaries.

Next,

I checked the Public records office and found this under 'Voluntary Liquidation of Company Agencies Files":

MING SANG (IMPORT & EXPORT) CO. LTD.  - 05.12.1947 - 25.09.1953

Next:

You go to the online newspapers for those dates and see if you can find his obit yourself.

Here is the link.  Let us know what you find out:

   http://hkclweb.hkpl.gov.hk/hkclr2/internet/eng/html/frm-bas_srch.html

Then:

I Googled  ""MING SANG" +SHIPPING COMPANY" and this popped up

Ming Sang (2) 1934 ex- Hai Li, 1938 purchased from China Merchants S.N. Co. renamed Ming Sang, 1941 scuttled at Hong Kong, salvaged by Japanese renamed Bisan Maru, 1945 mined and sunk.

Off to Google Books which has, intriguingly with other Hong Kong listings:

Ansari's trade & industrial directory of Pakistan

Ming Sang (Import & Export) Co. Ltd., Holland House, [Hong Kong]

There was also a

The Nautical magazine, Volumes 169-170

1953

Thomson, Captain Craig - Of the Ming Sang Steamship company of Hong Kong, in which he commanded the steamer kwong Fook cheung, is reported rrecovering well from an operation in Hong Kong.

So we have three company names:

Carl Smith
- MING SANG SHIPPING COMPANY

Companies Registry
- MING SANG (IMPORT & EXPORT) CO.
(1947 - 1953) (Co.#2474)

Magazine
- MING SANG STEAMSHIP COMPANY
(founded 1937) (Co.#1479)

Dear Jean,

The Plot for this grave is 37---/02/03-, which means it is in section 37. You can find the location of section 37 within the graveyard on this map.

The cemetery itself is in Happy Valley, which is on the north side of Hong Kong Island. You can see its location on this map.
