James Legge (1815-1897) took three young Chinese men to Scotland in 1848 to ensure they received "a good Scottish education". In their three years in Scotland they made great progress, developed a rich Scottish burr, had a personal meeting with Queen Victoria and Legge, then returned to Hong Kong. (Discussed in my book: James Legge and the Chinese Classics, 2016, Friesen Press. A painting was made of Legge with "the three lads", then turned into this engraving by Cochrane and published in a mission journal.
