Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) was part of a group of Dutch bachelors in pre-war Shanghai. Another member of this group was David van Gelderen (1908-1990), originally from Rotterdam. He arrived in Shanghai in 1933, working for Unilever, a merger of the operations of Dutch Margarine Unie and British soap maker Lever Brothers.

This 'Dollar Line' advertisement within the Shipping section of the Hongkong telegraph for February 1924 clearly suggest s that the Dollar Line "President" ships deployed on the Pacific route between Hong  Kong and USA  were all of the class of ships with a tonnage of about 10,500 tons.

This 'Dollar Line' advertisement within the Shipping section of the Hongkong telegraph for February 1925 suggests that the Dollar Line "President" ships deployed on the Pacific route between Hong  Kong and USA  had been upgraded to a  larger class of  535 ft .(length) ships ships with a tonnage of about 14,120 tons.
