Farewell dinner Klimanek, Hong Kong, 1950

Philip Harding Klimanek (1883-1965) was born in the Czech Republic, at the time his place of birth was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. In ca. 1905 he started to work for Holland-China Trading Company, in Hong Kong.

In 1939, when Charles Gesner van der Voort arrived in Shanghai to work for the company, he was Charles' superior. In a letter home he wrote: "Played chess with Klimanek in the French Club" [translation Pieter Lommerse, the French Club was Le Cercle Sportif Français, a fashionable place to be in the 1930s and it still exists today].

Official deed Holland-China Trading Company installing W. Kien as representative, 1903

Charles worked for Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC) in Shanghai. Willem Kien was made representative at the start of the firm in 1903, later he became director.

Little archival material is available today, as the Rotterdam office was bombed by German airplanes at the start of World War II in the Netherlands, in May 1940, so I am particularly pleased this deed survived, going back to the very start of the company.

Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC), Hong Kong, 1950, retirement Klimanek

Even though HCHC was taken over by Internatio in 1948, people kept referring to the company as Holland-China Trading Company. This group photo was taken for the occasion of senior manager Philip Harding Klimanek (front row, sixth from the left) leaving the company. Charles Gesner van der Voort can be found front row, first from the left, his wife Nancy third from the left. Phil Beekmeijer and his wife Ans are third row, first and second from the left.

Phil & Ans Beekmeijer waving off friends going on 'big leave', Hong Kong 1951

Charles Gesner van der Voort's friend Phil Beekmeijer lived in Hong Kong with his wife Ans Beekmeijer-Kroeze when this photo was taken. In this year, 1951, he had been awarded with the Dutch Bronze Cross, for his "very courageous and prudent acting" during the Battle of Arnhem, "in which he did not sleep for three days", his daughter Liesbeth adds. Proud of the honour of receiving the award, he wore the decoration, for the occasion of waving off friends for a 'big leave', which Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC) staff were entitled to after working abroad for four years.
