Abdul Aziz Rumjahn (a.k.a. Arthur James Rumjahn) (1904 Hong Kong-2nd March 1975 Hong Kong) was a distant cousin of mine. This photo of him in Hong Kong in 1934 has been given kind permission by his grandson to be posted here in gwulo after we recently made contact as part of my family history reserach.

The background is the distinctive Gloucester Building Clock Tower but does anyone know which roof top he was standing on? .

Close-up photo of the the tall and prominent clock tower of Gloucester Building in 1932. The tower clock had four-faces with 10ft diameter illluminated dials, visible form far away. The Telechron sysyem employed to drive the hands ensured that all four dials were  electrically synchronzied and constroled from  a master clock located in a control room. A description of the mechanism may be read on this Gwulo string HERE..

On New Years Day 1926, a large portion of the old Hong Kong Hotel (the part on Des Voeux Road Central & Pedder Street corner) was completely gutted by fire. Hongkong Land purchased the site in 1928 for $1,375,000 and developed Gloucester Building which was completed in 1932, a few years later the Hotel section was fomally named Gloucester Hotel. Gloucester Building was the first mixed-use building in Central, on the lower two levels were shops with internal arcades. Offices occupied the middle two floors and a small hotel, the top five floors.
