The Rockies 45,000 sq ft.jpg

A view of my grandparents' house "The Rockies" and the house above it, on Cheung Chau. I presume that the inscription "45,000 sq ft" on the back of the photo refers to the area of the land they bought. This would have been taken between 1946 and 1953, which was the period when they lived there. Does anyone know anything about that other house?

This the view from a small beach below (to the east of) my grandparents' house, The Rockies, on Cheung Chau. You can see that there was another house above theirs, which is on the ridge line in the background. Probably the site of or close to the current Salesian Mission Retreat on Don Bosco Road. This would have been taken between 1946 and 1953, which was the period when they lived there. Does anyone know anything about that other house?

This was the home of my grandparents Edgar and Kathe de Chaffoy de Courcelles on Cheung Chau soon after they had returned to Hong Kong after the war. My mother told me they built it in 1946, but perhaps in fact there had already been a European house there and they re-built it? They called it "The Rockies", for rather obvious reasons. Although my grandfather worked in Kowloon and Hong Kong, they lived there until 1953 when his business (The Orient Tobacco Manufactory) had been sold up and they retired to Portugal. They were never city people, and loved this house.

These are the two huge very distinctive that lay at the end of their rather wild garden: compare this recent photo to my "Kirsty's family 0043 - view from Rockies Cheung Chau.jpg" and you can see that even the garden path has hardly changed course.

Compare this to "Seascape peninsula NB rocks.gif" to confirm the location of the house on the site of what is now Seascape Peninsula apartments on Cheung Chau.

If you compare this photo to "Kirsty's family 0043 - view from Rockies Cheung Chau.jpg" you can see that the large round boulder here on the right of the path is there, on the left about halfway to the huge rocks.
