Victor's Bar / Conder's Bar (1st location) [????- ]

The address was 22A, Queen's Road Central. Contributor 1314 says it "was up an alley at the rear of, I think, Shell House." That matches the map shown on the business card.

The earliest mention of it we have so far shows it called "Victor's Bar", with Jack Conder as the licensee. (Read more about Jack Conder at: http://gwulo.com/node/17492). I'm not sure if it was named after a man named Victor, or if it referred to winning the war.

The 1956 phone book shows it had changed its name to "Conder's Bar".

Here is another recently scanned photo from the original negative-what a difference in quality to the old, faded photos I scanned on my printer a while back-this one is sharp and crisp, looking like it was just taken yesterday. Seeing how early in the evening it was, I must have taken this one, and then walked a short way down Lockhart to the San Francisco to have a drink (or two). By the time I came out of there, it was getting dark, and I took the last photo on the roll looking back down the street from in front of the SF (that would be the damaged photo I just posted)

Here is a badly damaged negative I had digitized, for the 'historical interest'. This shot was at the very end of the roll of film, and a careless developer just stapled something right over this shot. I never had this photo printed, but recently I sent a bunch of negatives to a place that scans them and sends them back on a DVD disk.

What a shame this one is so damaged. I took it on Lockhart Road in Wanchai, in the early evening, when the lights were just coming on in the bars (you can still see the sunlight up at the roofline)

This is yet another of the photos I took in Wanchai in July 1972. If I am right, I'm standing on the corner of Lockhart and Luard, looking down Lockhart. The harbor would have been to my right. I seem to recall a place that was just a window opening up to the street, selling Fish and Chips in a paper cone, and I think it was down Lockhart, about where that Tattoo sign is,or maybe a bit farther down that side of the street.

Here is another of the photos I took in Wanchai in July 1972. Being 19, this was where I spent almost all the time I was in HK. If I have my directions correct, I'm standing in front of the 'Mini Club' at Lockhart and Luard, and looking down Lockhart towards Fenwick. If I am right, I would be standing in front of the present (2009) "Club Venus"-if I did my 'walking tour' of Google Streetview right.

At any rate, in 1972, I went in every bar in that photo.
