I'm fairly sure this was taken in Hong Kong from the age of the young ladies, despite the fact that one of them is wearing a hat showing the badge of the Public and Thomas Hanbury School, Shanghai.
Are those Dairy Farm ice cream cups? Where are they? Looks like somewhere out in the NTs that you had to drive to.
Here is a very nice photo taken at the Peak Cafe, sometime in 1953 or '54. Having read "Golden Boy", it is altogether possible that Martin Booth was inside at that very moment, cadging a Coke from a US Serviceman.
At any rate, this is a rare, close-up photo of this place,which seems to have scarcely changed from when I ate lunch there 19 years later,in 1972. From this point in time, I can no longer remember if I sat at one of these tables outside, or went inside. <Read more ...>
