Heavy weather, the matshed above Blake Pier has already vanished.

The piers are Blake Pier, P&O Pier, Douglas Steamship Wharf and Pottinger Street Pier.

From the book by William Perry Fogg, published in Cleveland/Ohio in 1872. This photo was not printed but affixed as separate photo (the website refers "Albumen photographs"). Totally unclear why the author chose this one as "typical Hong Kong". The date should be 1870 or even older.

It shows early Wanchai with shipyards and the Blue Buildings to the right. Very similar to this one, but not the same:

1937 typhoon - An Lee

Chinese steamer "An Lee"

The An Lee could not withstand the typhoon, it bounced into the British cruiser HMS SUFFOLK and destroyers DUCHESS and DIAMOND, and finally ended stern-first on the praya wall.

Hotz collection: Hong Kong, Town of Victoria, ca. 1870

Charles Gesner van der Voort's (1916-1991) employer, Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC), was founded by several people, including Albert Hotz, through Hotz, s'Jacob & Co (Albertus Paulus Hermanus Hotz, born in Rotterdam in 1855, died in Italy in 1930).

Comparison of parts of two panorama views from

1887 (probably older)

1895

I can identify only two buildings on both photos, big changes in just ten years (possibily a bit more).

Hong Kong Panorama from Kowloon 1870's

Cropped from https://gwulo.com/atom/25853 (or actually from the original files from the UK National Archives on Flickr. There are four separate sheets starting here.)

It is amazing what high-resolution photos were made in the 1870's.

I have annotated this photo and identified some buildings. However, I'm not 100% sure, and many buildings are unknown to.
